arrival/departure draft to the Port of Buenaventura is 34 ft BW. Restriction is based on the entrance to
Buenaventura as there is a bar located between the No.1 buoy &
the No. 25 buoy - Vessel must take pilot 2 HR before high tide in order
to cross the bar at exactly the full high tide. The draft at piers during low
tide is between 29-30 ft BW. High tides will vary between 9 & 13 ft and
also water density fluctuates between 1.006 and 1.014 over the mean therefore
vessels with drafts over 30 ft will touch bottom alongside during the low tides

It is compulsory for all
domestic/foreign flag vessels over 500 GRT, for entering/departing , as well as
shifting between berths.
Pilot boarding takes place
only at fairway buoy 03° 47' 39,1'' N 77°19' 08,4'' W . Arrange a pilot ladder
1 meter above water level on portside. Distance from Pilot Station to the Port
is 16 nautical miles.
Tug Assistance
It is compulsory for all
vessels over 2,000 mt dwt. For vessels over 150 meters LOA, pilot may request a
second tug. There are 4 tugs available.

Pilot Assistance
Pilot assistance
compulsory for vessels above 500 grt going in/out of the port as well for
shifting between piers. Pilot station/boarding position 0.5 nautical mile due S
of the morro grande light. Santa Marta port control station and pilots can be
contacted on VHF channels 11, 16 and 74. A pilot ladder shall be rigged on the
starboard side of each Vessel unless otherwise instructed.
